I have spent thousands of hours in the sim over the years. I have driven with big, heavy headsets, tiny boutique visors, and almost everything in between. So when the Pimax Dream Air SE Lighthouse Edition showed up on my desk, I was eager to see if it could actually deliver where it matters most: out on the track.
To be totally honest, it blew me away before I even turned it on. Right out of the box, it delivered one of the easiest, most rewarding VR experiences I have ever had. Here is my full, hands-on review.
A Super Quick Lens Swap Trick
Before I even plugged in a single cable, I had a pleasant surprise. I happened to have some custom, empty lens inserts made for the Dream Air. I already knew that Pimax uses the exact same lens shape and housing dimensions as the Big Screen Beyond 2.
I walked right over to my Big Screen Beyond 2, popped the lenses out, and slid them straight into the Pimax lens frames.
They clicked in with a 100% perfect fit. No wobbling, no scraping, and no loose edges. Being able to transfer my custom lenses directly from one headset into another without spending extra money or waiting on another custom order was an immediate victory.
Unboxing: Impressed Before Even Plugging It In
When you take the Dream Air SE out of its packaging, you notice right away how featherlight it is. It does not feel like an awkward brick strapped to your forehead. The front visor features a clean, glossy curved shell with a sharp silver Pimax chevron emblem right across the center, giving it an aggressive motorsport look.

The face cushion is soft, breathable, and comfortably thick. It seals against your face naturally without pinching your nose or squeezing your temples. You can tell immediately that Pimax designed this for long endurance stints where comfort makes or breaks your race.
Setup and Eye Tracking in Under 30 Seconds
Getting PCVR gear to work can sometimes be a painful chore. With the Dream Air SE, it was smooth from start to finish:
- I connected the display and USB cables to my PC.
- I ran the quick software update.
- I followed the prompt to calibrate the eye tracking.
The eye tracking calibrated in under 30 seconds. It was simple, intuitive, and worked on the very first try.
To understand why this impressed me so much, remember that I bought the Big Screen Beyond 2e almost two years ago. I waited months and months for that headset to arrive, only to be significantly underwhelmed. Out of the box, the Beyond 2e had no built-in audio whatsoever and suffered from terrible light bleed around the face mask. The Dream Air SE was the exact opposite: polished, complete, and ready to race immediately.

Fixing the Ghosting: The 80% Brightness Sweet Spot
The Micro-OLED displays inside the Dream Air SE are capable of mind-blowing brightness and contrast. However, if you push the brightness setting to 100%, you will encounter noticeable motion ghosting—fast-moving objects will leave tiny smudges or motion trails when you whip your head toward an apex. The Big Screen Beyond 2 suffers from this exact same issue.
Fortunately, the solution is remarkably simple: turn the brightness slider down to 80%.
Setting brightness to 80% solves the problem completely. The ghosting disappears, motion becomes razor-sharp, and the color profile maintains that signature vibrant Pimax look. Better yet, because human eyes adapt quickly to light levels, you barely even notice the slight dip in brightness. It is an easy tweak that gives you the best of both worlds.
Night Racing and White Light Halos
Whenever you combine pancake optics with ultra-bright Micro-OLEDs in dark scenes, high-contrast light reflections can occur. If you are doing a night stint at Daytona or Le Mans and headlights flash against a pitch-black cockpit, you will see a subtle white light halo effect.
However, the halo on the Dream Air SE is far less noticeable than on the BSB2. It is mild enough that your brain filters it out almost immediately, letting you stay locked onto your apex without distraction.
Built-in Audio That Actually Delivers
One of the most irritating aspects of some ultra-compact headsets is that they leave out audio entirely to save weight. Having to put on a second set of headphones over your VR strap adds heat, weight, and dangling wires.
The Dream Air SE includes integrated audio built right into the strap, and the sound is like-for-like with the standard Dream Air. Engine revs, curb vibrations, and spotter warnings come through crisp and clear with no extra gear needed.
On Track: Pure Immersion at 72Hz
When I hopped into the rig and put the Dream Air SE through its paces in iRacing, the headset practically disappeared on my face.
I was running the 72Hz profile, and even at 72Hz, motion was remarkably fluid. I never once felt held back or limited while battling for position into turn one. Because the headset is so light and comfortable, all the physical distraction vanished. I was completely dialed into the race.
